New Cross Fire Memory Garden, Dalston Square
13 Sept 2025

A new memory garden dedicated to the victims and survivors of the 1981 New Cross Fire was unveiled by the New Cross Fire Foundation in Dalston Square, Hackney on 13 September 2026.

Dalston Square was originally created in 2009 in conjunction with the development of Dalston Junction Overground station. Recent improvements to Dalston Square are part of a broader vision to reinforce Dalston as a vibrant community focal point.

As part of these improvements, an exhibition space dedicated to celebrating Dalston’s vibrant music heritage has been created. The space aims to educate both residents and visitors about Dalston’s important role as a cultural hub within London’s music scene, preserving the legacy of these entertainment landmarks.

A new information panel traces the history of Dalston’s 19th-century theatre through to its demolition, and the first ten of 150 engraved stones have been installed, recognising individuals who have significantly contributed to Dalston’s vibrant musical past.  It highlights the contributions of several iconic local music venues, such as the Four Aces Club, the 007 Sun Valley Club, the Hideaway, Cubies, Oasis, and Roseberry’s.

Sir Charles Collins, a club-owner, entrepreneur, and music producer, whose son Steve Collins tragically died in the New Cross Fire, was a key advocate for justice for the victims and championed the creation of this memorial.

The project has been undertaken in close collaboration with the Older Generation, Younger Generation organisation, established by Sir Collins, which has contributed significantly to the heritage components of the redevelopment.

Directors from the New Cross Fire Foundation officially opened the memory garden, and the Foundation also ran a phase-one monument consultation exercise, collecting ideas and opinion from those who attended and passed by.

Gary Collins, Director of Operations for the New Cross Fire Foundation commented:

‘The garden stands as a poignant reminder and tribute to those affected by the fire, integrating remembrance into this community-focused redevelopment. It stands on the site where my father originally planted trees to remember the victims, so it is fitting that this garden continues that legacy of remembrance’.
